About Kommern and Mechernich
Mechernich is a town in the Eifel region with around 27,000 inhabitants. It is located in the district of Euskirchen and consists of 35 neighbourhoods. One of the best-known districts is Kommern.
Kommern is best known for its open-air museum, which was opened in 1965. It shows the history and culture of the Eifel region. Here, visitors can view historic buildings such as farmhouses, mills and workshops. Another highlight in Kommern is the Hochwildpark Rheinland. Here, visitors can observe wild animals such as red deer, fallow deer and elk in their natural environment. The park also has an adventure area for children.
Mechernich is also home to the Zikkurat Therme, one of the most modern thermal baths in Europe. The thermal baths offer a wide range of saunas, steam baths, relaxation areas and massage programmes. Another highlight in Mechernich is the climbing park. Here, visitors can test their climbing skills on various courses and explore their limits. The park also offers courses for beginners and advanced climbers. There are also a number of historical sights in the town, such as the ruins of Mechernich Castle, which was built in the 12th century. The castle was once the seat of the Lords of Mechernich and later served as a court and prison. Steinfeld Abbey, which was founded in the 11th century, is also located near Mechernich. The monastery was once an important centre of the Benedictine order and today serves as an educational and conference centre.
In addition to the sights, Mechernich also offers many opportunities for outdoor activities. The town is located in the centre of the Eifel and is surrounded by forests and lakes. Visitors can go hiking, cycling, fishing and much more here.
