Matomo: comprehensive web analytics for optimal performance
As a website operator, the use of web analytics software is crucial. It provides insights into user behaviour, helps with performance optimisation, enables target tracking and conversion optimisation, supports keyword analysis for better SEO and allows competitive analyses.
Matomo is my favourite open source web analytics platform. It provides website owners with detailed reports on website traffic, including visitor behaviour, referrers, conversions and more. Matomo offers similar features to Google Analytics, but is self-hosted, giving users full control over their data.

- CustomisationUsers can customise Matomo to track specific metrics and events relevant to their websites or applications. This flexibility enables customised analytics reports to meet specific business needs.
- Real-time reportingMatomo provides real-time reports that allow users to monitor website traffic in real time.
- Open SourceAs open source software, Matomo allows users to inspect and modify the source code according to their requirements, which promotes transparency and security.
- Data sovereigntyMatomo ensures that users have full ownership of their data, unlike some other analytics platforms where data ownership may be more ambiguous.
- GDPR complianceMatomo offers features that help users comply with data protection regulations, such as anonymising IP addresses and providing options for users to opt out of tracking.
- Plugins and extensionsMatomo has a thriving ecosystem of plugins and extensions that extend its functionality and allow users to integrate additional features or further customise their analytics configuration.

As a web designer, I not only offer the creation of appealing and functional websites, but also a comprehensive service that includes web analytics using Matomo. AIDA in web design: proven strategy for more success
As a graphic and web designer, I am passionate about not only creating aesthetically pleasing websites, but also ensuring that they effectively engage my clients' target audience and motivate them to take action. With this in mind, I'd like to share a proven strategy that can help achieve just that: the AIDA principle.
A for Attention
The first step in designing a new website for you and your business is to grab the attention of visitors. Through thoughtful design with appealing graphics, clear typography and an inviting colour scheme, I want to ensure that visitors are immediately drawn to your website. Remember that first impressions are crucial - a well-designed homepage or an impressive hero banner can make all the difference.
I for Interest
Once you have captured the attention of your visitors, it is important to arouse their interest. We offer relevant content that addresses the needs and problems of your target group. Using engaging text and supporting images or videos to present your offer in an attractive way means that the better you understand and address your visitors' needs, the more likely they are to stay on your website and want to learn more.
D for Desire
Once we have aroused their interest, you want to increase their desire for your offer. Let's work together to show how your product or service can solve their problems or fulfil their needs. Let's use customer reviews, success stories or other forms of social proof to build trust and increase your visitors' desire. Let's convince them that your offer is exactly what they are looking for.
A for Action
The final step is the call to action. We place clear calls-to-action at strategic points on your website that encourage visitors to take the desired action - be it a purchase, filling out a contact form or subscribing to a newsletter. I design these CTAs for you to be eye-catching but not intrusive, making it easy for your visitors to take action.
By incorporating the AIDA principle into your web design, we can ensure that your website not only looks beautiful, but is also effective at attracting visitors, piquing their interest, increasing their desire and ultimately getting them to take the desired action. If you need further assistance in implementing this principle for your website, I would be happy to help.
Fresh on the net: Frey to the power of three!
For one of my most loyal customers I have successfully three customised landing pages which are specially designed for different product lines. These pages were specifically designed to optimally present the uniqueness and appeal of the respective devices. The design of the landing pages required a fine balance between a consistent design that emphasises the brand identity and an individual layout that highlights the uniqueness and appeal of the products. The key component is to skilfully integrate the brand guidelines and elements into the design, while leaving room for creative freedom to combine the best of both worlds:
The advantages of these customised landing pages are manifold. Firstly, they make it possible to address the target group precisely, as they provide the relevant information that potential customers are looking for. This leads to a higher conversion rate as visitors immediately find what they are looking for. Secondly, special attention was paid to optimising user-friendliness. The clear structure and appealing design ensure a pleasant user experience, which in turn increases the time spent on the pages. Thirdly, the landing pages are optimised for different screen sizes to ensure that they work optimally on all devices, be it desktop, tablet or smartphone.
For efficient navigation and an improved user experience, there is an additional top page with the function as a selection option for the three landing pages - also known as Splash page or hub page. It not only enables a clear and simple selection for visitors, but also contributes to a uniform design that strengthens the brand identity.
The benefits of this structure include ease of use, tracking of visitor behaviour, flexibility for future expansion and potential SEO improvements. The clear and intuitive navigation on the hub page ensures that visitors can easily find the information they are looking for, while also allowing for easy customisation for possible future additions to product lines.
- Centralised control: The top page acts as a central point of contact from which visitors can navigate to the various product lines. This enables a structured and targeted experience.
- User friendliness: The use of a selection option at the top makes it easy for visitors to select the desired product line. This contributes to improved user-friendliness.
- Standardised design: The top page can have a uniform design that reinforces the brand identity. From there, visitors can move seamlessly to the individual landing pages, creating a consistent overall image.
- Tracking and analyses: By using a central hub page, web designers can better track and analyse visitor behaviour. This enables a more detailed evaluation of which product lines are particularly popular or which page has the highest conversion rate.
- Flexibility for future expansions: If more product lines are added in the future, the top page can be easily customised to make room for the new options without having to redesign the entire website.
- SEO benefits: Using a hub page can help improve search engine optimisation by making the structure of the website clearer and linking the pages better together.

Tips & Tricks No. 18
In the "neunmalklug" section, I publish tips, tricks and technical information about graphic and web design at irregular intervals. Today:
9 terms that have made it from typography & printing technology into everyday language
- CopyIn classical letterpress printing, an impression was a first proof or a simple test print (the material to be printed was placed on the inked printing plate and usually tapped with a brush, whereby the printing ink clapped off onto the sheet). Today, the word is used to describe an inferior copy or imitation.
- ClichéCliché: Originally, it was a printing term for a printing plate that was used to create identical copies of an original. This is why "cliché" is also used today in a figurative sense to describe stereotypical ideas or entrenched opinions.
- LapidaryOriginally a simple font, also known as "lapidary script" (from the Latin "lapis" for "stone"). In everyday language, "lapidary" is used to express something succinctly and with little embellishment.
- Waste paperIn the printing industry, "waste" refers to unusable or faulty printed copies (from the Latin word maculatura: "the stained"). In the vernacular, it is used to refer to something superfluous or scrap material.
- MarginaliaIn typography, a marginalia refers to a note in the margin or a marginal note (marginalis: "concerning the margin"). In everyday language, the term is used for a triviality or an unimportant note.
- Matrix: A stamp used for casting fonts. Today it is often used as a synonym for "foundation" or "base".
- CategoryThe term rubric comes from the red (Latin: rubrum) colour that was used in religious books to mark instructions for the liturgy and was also used for headings and other structural elements, i.e. it denotes a heading or keyword that identifies a specific area of content. In everyday language, the term "rubric" is used for a category or section.
- StereotypeStereotyping refers to the process of moulding and reproducing typesetting or printing blocks. In common parlance, the term, like cliché, has come to epitomise entrenched ideas, which in the case of stereotype primarily stand for simplifications and prejudices.
- Type caseIn typography, a type case refers to a tool used to set type - the many lead letters lay sorted in the small compartments of wooden boxes. Today, the term is used for a decorative collection of objects in small wooden compartments.

Corporate design, visual identity and style guide
As a graphic designer, it is important for me to explain terms such as corporate design, visual identity and style guide to my clients, because a common understanding forms the basis for successful projects. Clarity about these concepts not only enables more effective communication, but also promotes informed decision-making and builds trust between me and my clients. This contributes to better collaboration, high-quality designs and long-term client relationships.
Corporate Design (CD) refers to the visual identity of a company, including all aspects that make it visually unique. It includes specifications for images and graphic elements that customers perceive of the brand, from logos to shop fittings. CD creates a clear visual identity and differentiates the company from other brands.
The visual identity represents all the visual elements of a brand. A professional visual identity is crucial as it is the face of the company and makes the first impression on potential customers. It goes beyond logos and colours; it should offer a convincing representation of the brand's core values and unique selling points.
Why a professional visual identity is important
- Differentiation: In a crowded market, it emphasises the brand and makes it easier for customers to remember.
- Credibility and trust: A professional identity conveys reliability and credibility, which arouses the interest of consumers.
- Consistency: It creates a consistent brand experience across different platforms and ensures instant recognition.
- Emotional connection: An effective identity builds an emotional bond and promotes customer loyalty.
- Communication of values: It can convey the values, mission and personality of the company, which promotes identification with the brand.
Building an effective visual identity
- Definition of the brand: Clear definition of core values, mission and target group for a precise visual representation.
- Unforgettable logo: Design of a simple, versatile and easily recognisable logo.
- Select colour palette: Selection of colours that match the personality of the brand and are visually appealing.
- Typography: Choose consistent fonts that reflect the brand and are easy to read.
- Creation of brand guidelines: Create a comprehensive set of rules to ensure consistent branding.
- Use high-quality images: Use of images that match the values of the brand and appeal to the target group.
- Maintain consistency: Ensure a uniform appearance across all platforms.
- Adaptation and further development: The identity should evolve as the company grows in order to remain relevant.
A Style Guide is a practical document that provides specific instructions on the correct application of the corporate design. It serves as a reference tool and ensures that everyone involved works consistently and uses the corporate design in accordance with the defined standards.
You could also say that corporate design is the "what" (the visual identity), while the style guide is the "how" (the instructions on how to apply the corporate design correctly). Both are crucial to ensure that a brand is presented consistently and professionally.
Successful examples
- Apple Inc: Known for minimalism, elegance and innovation, the bitten apple logo has represented these values for decades.
- Coca-Cola: The iconic red and white logo conveys tradition and nostalgia, echoing the brand's long history.
- Airbnb: The brand symbolises modernity and inclusivity, with a logo that combines a heart and a place mark.
To summarise, a professional visual identity is crucial in order to stand out in a highly competitive market. It serves as a recognisable feature, builds trust, creates emotional connections and communicates the brand's values. Continuity and adaptability are key to building a strong and recognisable brand.
New logo for Metallbau Steinhof
The young business owner of Metallbau Steinhof was looking for a logo that would consciously stand out from the usual clichés such as tools, screws, hammers and anvils or even a welder. Instead, we wanted to pursue a more contemporary approach together. The result is a figurative mark made up of spatially arranged lines that reflects the versatility of the company's services - from doors, gates and railings to steel structures.
Such a modern, abstract logo made of lines offers numerous advantages, including a contemporary appearance, versatility in interpretation, the ability to create a unique brand image, a reduced, clear aesthetic and flexibility in various applications. It helps to create a contemporary, versatile and memorable brand identity.
Visual persuasiveness: outdoor advertising with banners and tarpaulins
Advertising banners, billboards and tarpaulins play a crucial role in a company's advertising strategy. These forms of outdoor advertising are important because they appeal to a broad target group, remain in the memory of potential customers and increase brand awareness.
Here are some reasons why these advertising media are important for companies:
- Reach and visibility
Large billboards and advertising banners are often placed in highly frequented locations, such as on main roads or in shopping centres. They therefore reach a large number of people, both pedestrians and motorists. This broad visibility is crucial for reaching potential customers and increasing brand awareness. - Attract attention
Large and eye-catching advertising banners attract the attention of passers-by. Creative design, vibrant colours and interesting messages can help to make people stop and take a closer look at the advertisement. An appealing advert sticks in people's minds, making it more likely that they will remember the advertised company later. - Addressing local target groups
Large billboards and banners are particularly effective for local companies as they can specifically address local target groups. People in the immediate vicinity become aware of the company and are more likely to visit the shop or make use of the advertised product or service. - Flexibility and creativity
Advertising tarpaulins and banners offer companies the opportunity to be creative and communicate different messages. They can advertise seasonal offers, draw attention to special promotions or present new products. This flexibility allows companies to adapt their advertising messages to current needs and trends. - Creating credibility and trust
For many people, well-placed and professionally designed advertising banners radiate seriousness and trustworthiness. Companies that invest in high-quality advertising are often perceived as established and reliable. This can boost the confidence of potential customers and encourage them to try out the advertised company's products or services.
Professionally designed advertising banners, billboards and tarpaulins are therefore indispensable tools for attracting the attention of a broad target group, increasing brand awareness, appealing to local customers and gaining the trust of consumers. They are not only eye-catchers, but also powerful communication tools that strengthen a brand's image and play a key role in attracting potential customers and building long-term customer loyalty. Through their visual presence, they play a key role in ensuring a company's success in today's highly competitive market.
Mobile devices on the rise: How companies are adapting to new user habits
The way people access the internet is constantly changing and these changes have a significant impact on companies' online presence. Significant shifts in internet usage have been observed over the last two years, particularly in terms of the types of devices used.
This data provides insights into the percentage distribution of internet usage on desktop computers, smartphones and tablets in Germany over the period from September 2021 to September 2023. The values indicate the proportion of internet usage attributable to each device type - the figures provide interesting insights into user preferences (source: StatCounter).

Here is a brief analysis of this data:
- Desktop use:
The use of desktop computers is declining, from 58.44% in September 2021 to 55.38% in September 2023, which could indicate that people are increasingly switching to mobile devices to access the internet. - Mobile use:
The use of smartphones remains high and is increasing slightly, from 38.88% in September 2021 to 42.06% in September 2023. This underlines the continuing trend towards mobile internet use. - Tablet use:
Tablet usage remains relatively low compared to desktop and mobile, but fluctuates slightly between 2% and 3%. It seems that tablets are not as widely used as smartphones or desktop computers for accessing the internet.
Overall, the development of the data shows that desktop usage is decreasing, while mobile usage, particularly via smartphones, continues to increase. This is in line with global trends that show a shift towards mobile internet usage. It is important to note that these trends may be influenced by various factors such as improved mobile technologies, affordable smartphones and wider availability of mobile internet services.

Changes in internet usage have a direct impact on companies' online presence. Here are some thoughts on how companies can respond to these trends:
- Mobile optimisation:
With more and more people accessing the internet via mobile devices, it is crucial to ensure that the company website is optimised for mobile devices. The website should utilise responsive design to ensure an optimal user experience on smartphones and tablets. - Fast loading times:
Mobile users are often more impatient than desktop users. A fast website loading time is crucial to improve the user experience and ensure that visitors do not bounce due to long loading times. - Content optimisation:
Content should be optimised for mobile users. This means not only adapting texts and images, but also offering easily digestible content such as videos and short text sections that can be displayed well on small screens. - Security and data protection:
With the increase in mobile internet usage, awareness of security and data protection has also risen. Companies should ensure that their websites are secure and comply with data protection regulations in order to gain the trust of users. - Customer service and communication:
Mobile devices also offer new opportunities for customer service, be it via chat apps or social media. Companies can use mobile platforms to communicate directly with their customers and provide quick answers to questions or problems.
In many cases, a company's sector will play a role in Internet usage behaviour.

Online presence and adaptation to the changing habits of Internet users depend heavily on the type of business:
Company in the E-Commerce area often benefit greatly from the increase in mobile internet usage. With many people shopping online on mobile, e-commerce companies need to ensure that their websites and apps are optimised for mobile devices in order to remain competitive.
For local services such as hairdressers or restaurants, local search via mobile devices can be crucial. Customers often search for nearby services on their smartphones, so good visibility on mobile devices and positive online reviews are of great importance.
Companies that Media content must adapt to the habits of users who are increasingly using mobile devices to stream videos and music. This often requires the development of mobile apps and the optimisation of content for mobile devices.
For certain B2B (Business-to-Business) or in sectors such as management consultancy or legal advice, the importance of mobile internet use may be lower, as customers may be less likely to utilise these services via mobile devices. Nevertheless, online presence and accessibility via mobile devices can also be important here in order to appeal to potential customers.
Overall, it is crucial for companies to adapt to the changing habits of internet users. This means not only optimising for mobile devices, but also understanding the specific needs and expectations of the mobile target group. A user-friendly, fast and secure online presence is becoming increasingly important in order to remain competitive and provide a positive user experience.
Tips & Tricks No. 17
In the "neunmalklug" section, I publish tips, tricks and technical information about graphic and web design at irregular intervals. Today:
Newsletters that convince your readers
Good newsletter examples can serve as inspiration for your own newsletter and help you to strengthen your customer loyalty and sell products through targeted email marketing. Before you get started, however, you should make a few important considerations:
- Define target group: Think about who you want to address - prospective customers, existing customers or potential new customers. Segment your contacts accordingly to provide relevant content.
- Offer added value: Varied content such as specialist knowledge, tutorials and company information together with product highlights and voucher codes make for an interesting newsletter.
- Choose the right tool: Use professional newsletter software that gives your brand a trustworthy and contemporary image and complies with data protection regulations.
Visual design is crucial:
- Sender and subject line: Create trust with a clear sender and an appealing, intriguing subject line. Emojis can also enhance the subject line.
- Use pre-header: This first line of the newsletter offers space for further information and an exciting hook. Avoid repetitions from the subject line.
- Design: An appealing header image, balanced image/text ratio, clear structure and a well-designed email signature and footer are crucial to arouse the recipient's interest.
A successful newsletter not only appeals, but also convinces visually and in terms of content - the perfect combination for a successful email marketing campaign.
9 imaginative examples of successful newsletter design
Creative visuals: Inspire your subscribers with imaginative designs, be it with captivating header images or innovative graphics. The newsletter example, in which handwritten fonts and tempting tea offers harmonise, creates a unique connection. This personal touch gives your communication depth and sustainability. Show that details make the difference and create an unforgettable experience for your readers.
Structured organisation: Design your newsletter carefully: an appealing header image and skilfully placed call-to-action buttons guide readers through the content. Think of a structured newsletter in which a consistent theme is followed like a red thread (here in yellow). This clear structure not only provides orientation, but also gives your newsletter an appealing and easy-to-understand form.
Animated highlights: Cleverly placed GIFs give your newsletter a dynamic touch without overloading it. Imagine an animated header graphic that comes to life with colourful accents. These subtle animations add a playful dimension to the newsletter while keeping readers intrigued. Use these creative elements to present your message in an innovative and appealing way.
Gift ideas: Make it easier for your readers to find the perfect gift by presenting suitable ideas for different occasions. In the example, you can see compelling offers with winter motifs emphasised by clear and attractive images. These visual elements not only provide inspiration, but also create an emotional connection. Make it easy for your readers to celebrate special moments with your products!
Versatile content: Establish a balanced variety of content and formats that go beyond pure product advertising. Creative ideas and relevant information are the key to deepening reader loyalty. Inspire your readers not only with products, but also with insights, tips and original ideas that offer added value. This will create a lasting relationship and keep your audience engaged and informed.
Corporate Design: Ensure that your newsletter reflects the consistent image of your company. Your newsletter is like a mirror image of your brand in the corporate colours. Matching call-to-action buttons reinforce recognition and direct readers to relevant information. This coherent presentation not only strengthens your brand identity, but also promotes the trust of your subscribers by giving them a consistent and professional communication experience.
Attractive product images: Use high-quality photos to visually emphasise your products - in the example of a cosmetics newsletter that impresses with aesthetic product images: the balanced ratio of images to text conveys what readers can expect in an appealing way - this also creates an emotional connection that inspires customers to buy. Use the power of images to communicate your message and attract the attention of your target group.
Clear, modern design: A minimalist and straightforward design gives your newsletter a touch of luxury. In the last example, you can see high-quality images of living rooms which, together with discreet calls to action (CTA buttons), create an exclusive atmosphere. This layout not only creates visual pleasure, but also draws attention to relevant information. Discover the potential of an appealing design to present your message with a touch of elegance.
Website and/or social media?
Do I need a website or are social media profiles enough? The answer depends on various factors: A website offers freedom of design, can provide comprehensive information and is flexibly customisable. Social media profiles enable a greater reach, but require regular updating and can quickly overlap important information.
A website serves as a central point of contact for your company or brand in the digital space. These comprehensive features are limited on social media platforms, where information is often ephemeral and cannot be presented in the same structured way as on a dedicated website. Whilst social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram or TikTok are useful for increasing your reach and engaging with your target audience, they generally offer fewer opportunities to present comprehensive information about your business. A website, on the other hand, can provide a comprehensive representation of your company, products or services and serve as a hub from which potential customers can get all the information they need.
With your own website, you have full control over the design, content and functionalities. Unlike social media platforms, where you are subject to the guidelines and changes of the platform operators, your website gives you the freedom to design and customise it entirely according to your own ideas. A professional website allows you to present your brand identity and branding consistently. You can create the design and colours to match your company exactly and create a uniform perception among visitors.
A website allows you to provide extensive content such as blog posts, product descriptions, testimonials, FAQs and much more. This allows you to showcase your expertise, inform your target audience and gain the trust of potential customers. With a customised website, you can include specific features and interactions that are relevant to your target audience and goals. This can range from customised contact forms to e-commerce functions and interactive elements.
A website offers you the best basis for targeted search engine optimisation (SEO). By optimising your website for search engines, you can increase your visibility in search results and gain organic traffic. Ranking in search results is crucial for many companies to attract new customers. A website makes it possible to take targeted SEO measures to improve visibility - companies can tailor their content and offers to their target groups. Through analysis and data, they can understand visitor behaviour and adapt their website accordingly to better meet the needs of their customers. The findings can be used to optimise the offer, adapt marketing strategies and improve customer service.
Social media platforms can change or adapt their guidelines, which can have a negative impact on a company's reach and visibility. With their own website, companies are less dependent on such changes and retain control over their online presence. A professional website is therefore a long-term investment for your company. While social media platforms and trends may change, your website will usually remain stable and provide you with a permanent presence on the internet.
Despite the existence of social media, a professionally designed website is still very important for companies. It acts as a central point of contact and provides comprehensive information about the company, which is limited on social media platforms. With its own website, the company retains control over design, content and functions, in contrast to the restrictions imposed by social media guidelines. The website enables consistent branding, extensive content such as blogs and testimonials, targeted search engine optimisation and individual interaction options. It also ensures data protection and independence from third-party providers, which is an advantage in an ever-changing digital landscape. Ultimately, having your own website gives companies freedom, control and flexibility in how they present their business online and is a long-term investment in their online presence. Companies that are only present on social media platforms often come across as less reputable. Social media can be supportive, but the website remains the central point of contact for a company in the digital space.
A website is therefore essential and should serve as the basis, while social media profiles can be a useful addition. The ideal strategy is to combine both and choose the right network for the target group.
Professional colour advice: your logo, your message, your target group - the right choice of colour
Wouldn't it be interesting to sort well-known German company logos by colour to see which colours dominate and which are the least common?
In order to analyse the approximate distribution of the colours of around 100 logos of German companies, I did not carry out an extensive study, but collected the logos of the largest listed companies in Germany (2023)* and sorted them by colour. In Germany, too, the dominance of colours naturally depends on various factors, including industry preferences, design trends and cultural influences. However, clear trends can be observed:
- Blue is often a dominant colour in many company logos. This is because blue symbolises trust, seriousness and reliability. Many banks, technology companies and healthcare organisations use blue in their logos to emphasise these qualities.
- Red is another common colour and stands for passion, energy and attention. It is often used in the logos of companies in the food and beverage and retail sectors to attract the attention of customers.
- Although Orange and yellow are vibrant colours, they are not used as often as other colours. However, they can be found in the logos of companies in the leisure, entertainment and children's products sectors.
- Green is often associated with environmental friendliness, health and sustainability, which is why it is more frequently represented in the logos of companies in these industries, but rather rare overall.
- Pink & Purple are rather rare colours in company logos. They are often associated with creativity, innovation and spirituality and are often found in the logos of companies from these sectors.
- Black and white have not been included in this thought experiment. These neutral colours are often used to convey elegance, minimalism and timelessness. Luxury brands and designers often favour black and white in their logos.
As a graphic designer, it is important to me to offer new customers professional advice on choosing the right colour for their logo.
Here is some advice I would like to give to new customers:
- The Target group understand: I ask my clients about their target group and their customers. What message or emotions do they want to convey? The colour should match the target group.
- The Competition consider: Let's look at the logos of my clients' competitors: What colours are commonly used in the industry? A different colour choice can help to stand out from the competition, but it is also important to fit in with the general image of the industry.
- About the Message think: What message or values do my customers want to convey with the logo? Each colour has a unique emotional impact. For example, blue symbolises trust, red passion and energy, green sustainability and health. I make sure that the chosen colour matches the desired message.
- Various Options test: I encourage my clients to try out different colour options. I create designs with different colour schemes so that my clients get a better idea of how the logo might look in different colours.
- To the Practicality think: I make sure that the chosen colour works well in different applications and on different media. The logo should be effective in colour print, black and white and digital applications.
- The Consistency true: If my clients already have a colour palette for their business, the logo should fit into that palette to ensure a consistent brand identity.
I let my customers have a say: The most important thing for me is to involve customers in the process and take their opinions and preferences into account. Ultimately, the logo is an important part of the brand and they should be able to identify with it. Collaboration and communication are key to finding the right colour for my clients' logo. My expertise and creativity as a graphic designer can help make a colour choice that effectively represents your client's brand. By providing my clients with professional advice and support in choosing the right colour for their logo, I can help create an effective and appealing logo.

Business cards & stationery: How business stationery strengthens your identity
Well-designed business stationery, such as letterhead and business cards, is of central importance for companies. It not only conveys a professional impression and strengthens the trust of customers, but is also an essential part of the brand identity.
A company needs well-designed stationery such as letterhead and business cards for a variety of reasons. These elements are far more than just practical tools; they are an important part of corporate identity and business success.
Well-designed business stationery creates a professional impression. When customers, business partners or potential customers see stationery or business cards that are carefully designed, it gives the impression that the company or person is serious and professional. This can build trust and leave positive first impressions. The stationery serves as an important part of the brand identity. It should reflect the company's logo, colour scheme and fonts. A consistent brand identity is crucial to promote brand recognition and strengthen the brand image.
Well-designed business equipment can serve as a marketing tool in this way: Creative designs and high-quality materials can leave positive impressions and attract potential customers. They are a simple but effective way to present the company and stand out from the competition. Professionally designed business stationery signals that you pay attention to detail and quality. This can help to strengthen business relationships and improve the company's reputation.
Stationery and business cards are also effective communication tools. They contain contact information that makes it easier for customers and business partners to get in touch with the company. A clear and understandable design is of great importance here. These elements also fulfil practical functions. Stationery is needed to conduct written correspondence and business cards offer quick contact options in business situations. They are indispensable for exchanging information efficiently.
This equipment serves as an effective means of communication and can even be used as a marketing tool to attract customers. Emphasising quality and detail signals professionalism and strengthens business relationships. In addition, there are legal requirements regarding business stationery, and it also fulfils practical functions in day-to-day business. Overall, well-designed business stationery is an indispensable contribution to a positive corporate identity and success in business.
Beastly good maps: designing a site plan for the wildlife park
I had the opportunity to create a site plan for the Wildlife park in Kommern to create. This required careful planning and creativity to create an informative and engaging map. Together with my clients, I gathered the information about animal enclosures, attractions and trails and emphasised the geographical arrangement of the elements. The use of colours and symbols helped to identify different areas and emphasise the proximity to nature. Important information such as animal species and safety instructions were integrated. After consultation with the park team, the map was used in various printed promotional materials and published digitally on the website. This work was a fulfilling opportunity to use my design skills to enhance the visitor experience and emphasise the wildlife.
Attractive site plan illustrations are crucial - and not just for a wildlife park - for several reasons. Firstly, they provide clear orientation for visitors by showing the geographical distribution of animal enclosures, attractions, facilities and pathways, making it easier for visitors to find their way around the park. Secondly, they serve as an important source of information by providing details of animal species and attractions in different areas of the park, allowing visitors to search specifically for their interests. Thirdly, appealing site plan illustrations enhance the overall experience of the zoo by presenting the wildlife and park facilities in a visually appealing way, emphasising the park's atmosphere and proximity to nature and animals. Fourthly, they are used for marketing and promotional purposes to attract potential visitors, whether in brochures, on websites or on social media.
To summarise, such site map illustrations are an essential part of the zoo experience, helping visitors to find their way around, find information, enhance their experience and improve safety, while also promoting the park's marketing.
Fresh on the net: Sheep Breeders' Association
It was a pleasure to design the website for the Breeding Association for East Prussian Skudden and Roughwool Pomeranian Land Sheep e.V. to undergo a comprehensive redesign. With a contemporary technical approach and a modern, fresh layout, I was able to help bring the pages up to date.
The Sheep Breeders' Association is a registered, non-profit organisation whose purpose is to preserve and promote the breeding of these two old domestic breeds in their original form. The organisation and all work and tasks are carried out on a voluntary basis.
I hope that the updated website will help to strengthen the online presence of the association and make a positive contribution to the presentation of the Zuchtverband für Ostpreußische Skudden und Rauhwollige Pommersche Landschafe e.V. in the digital space.
Tips & Tricks No. 16
In the "neunmalklug" section, I publish tips, tricks and technical information about graphic and web design at irregular intervals. Today:
9 facts about the importance of typography
The careful selection and use of fonts is an essential aspect of graphic and web design. By focusing on legibility, visual hierarchy and consistent branding, you can optimise text in designs and create an appealing overall look.
- Fonts play a crucial role in the visual communication of texts and contribute to the mood and readability of a design. For example, a sans serif font such as Arial can convey a modern and clear impression.
- Legibility is a key aspect of typography. A font that is easy to read enables users to grasp the text quickly and effortlessly. Serif fonts such as Times New Roman are often intended for longer sections of text, as the serifs support the flow of the text.
- Text formatting such as line spacing, character spacing and paragraph spacing influence the readability and visual flow of the text. Sufficient line spacing can make the text airier and easier to read.
- The right combination of fonts makes it possible to create visual hierarchies and differentiate between different elements in the design. You can use a sans serif font for headlines and a serif font for body text to create a clear distinction.
- When selecting fonts, it is important to consider the character of the design and the target group. Of course, a playful and handwritten font will be suitable for a children's book, while a serious and professional font will be more suitable for a corporate website.
- The scalability of fonts is crucial for legibility and adaptation to different screen sizes. In web design in particular, care should be taken to ensure that the fonts are easy to read on mobile devices.
- When using fonts in web design projects, it is important to use web fonts to ensure that the selected fonts are displayed correctly on different devices.
- White space or blank space around the text is an important design aspect of typography. It creates visual breathing spaces and increases readability. For example, sufficient space between paragraphs can make the text more accessible.
- It is advisable not to use too many different fonts in one design to create a harmonious and cohesive overall look. A good rule of thumb is to limit yourself to 2-3 fonts and make sure they go well together.

Fresh on the net: Dardenne Travel
For my long-standing customer, Dardenne TravelI was able to carry out a comprehensive website redesign to bring the online presence up to date with the latest technology. In developing the new design concept, I preserved the company's corporate design and integrated numerous images, graphics and texts from the previous pages. The result is a website that not only provides a familiar overview of the content and gives visitors a fresh look and feel, but also increases user-friendliness and is particularly mobile-friendly thanks to modern technologies.
Dardenne Reisen GmbH has been a successful family business based in Schleiden in the Eifel region for over six decades. As a "bus company with a satisfaction guarantee", the company has extensive experience in scheduled and touring services and works together with various providers. Special care was taken to ensure smooth navigation and quick access to information for all user groups on the website.
Competitive advantage through originality: the importance of unusual advertising materials
Unusual advertising materials can be advantageous for companies in many ways. They offer an opportunity to stand out from the crowd and attract the attention of potential customers.
Eye-catching promotional gifts are an effective marketing tool that aims to attract the attention of potential customers and leave a lasting impression. They go beyond traditional promotional items and rely on creativity, originality and uniqueness to effectively convey a brand or company's message. Here are a few reasons why companies might consider using unusual promotional products:
- High recognition value: If the advertising material is unique and unconventional, companies are better remembered by the target group. This can lead to increased recognition and therefore more customer loyalty.
- Attract attention: Unusual promotional items such as a printed beer mat or personalised drinking bottles have a higher chance of attracting attention. When a company uses a creative and unusual promotional gift or medium, it generates interest and can lead to people talking about it or sharing it on social media.
- Differentiation from the competition: In highly competitive industries, an original promotional item such as a deckchair can help you stand out from the competition. Customers may be more willing to engage with a company that is characterised by creativity and originality.
- Emotional attachment: Unusual advertising materials can create an emotional connection to the company. By surprising or delighting customers, they create a positive association and strengthen the brand image.
- Virality and word of mouth: Unique promotional items such as a personalised cutting disc have the potential to go viral. If customers are enthusiastic about an unusual promotional gift, they often share it with friends and acquaintances, which leads to additional reach.
- Addressing new target groups: Even in small formats such as round magnets or stickers, creative advertising media can appeal to target groups that are not normally the direct focus of the company. This can extend the reach and market penetration.
- Emphasising the corporate culture: A company can express its own culture and personality through unusual advertising materials. This can appeal to customers who share similar values.
The choice of promotional product should always be made in accordance with the target group and the brand identity. The cost of such promotional items should also be taken into account, as they may be higher than conventional promotional items. Nevertheless, well-thought-out, unusual promotional items can be a worthwhile investment to increase the awareness and success of a company.
Professional website or homepage construction kit?
Although it may seem that website builders offer an easy and inexpensive way to create a website, they are not always the best choice when it comes to sophisticated projects and an effective online presence.
Completed websites that have been created with the help of modular systems are often frustratingly similar to numerous other sites on the Internet that also use the same system. Why is this the case? Although the providers of these systems promise individual customisation of the web design, in practice users can usually only change colours, text and images without additional knowledge. They are often denied in-depth customisation - the options are very limited as the framework is strictly predefined and cannot be changed. And nowadays, a homepage needs more than just a few lines of text and images.
A modular site is just a modular site, and that's obvious - even to your customers.
There are ready-made templates, and the big advantage is that you have a page in no time at all that you don't have to fiddle with (and shouldn't, because then it gets very complicated very quickly). As a result, however, the websites of hairdressers, dentists and hundreds of other providers are astonishingly similar. There is a lack of individuality and creativity.

A technically flawless website is of great importance for a positive user experience and a better ranking in Search engines. As a web designer, I can also optimise your website for search engines to increase your visibility in search results and attract more visitors.
More complex requirements that go beyond the possibilities of website construction kits can be implemented by me as a web designer with expertise in customised programming or integrations. The advantage of this is that no specialist knowledge is required, which saves a lot of time and money. Saves timeand the result looks as planned, namely professionally designed. Another argument in favour: the online world is constantly evolving and I always know the latest and most relevant Trends. I also offer long-term support, as I not only help with the creation of the website, but also with its ongoing maintenance. Maintenance, updating and problem solving.
ConclusionA professionally designed website exudes trust and credibility and makes your company appear reputable and quality-conscious. While website builders offer a simple and cost-effective way to create a website, they reach their limits when it comes to more sophisticated projects and an effective online presence. As a web design professional, I can realise your vision and help you achieve your online goals.
Fresh on the net: Zehntscheune / North Gate Kronenburg
Experience the perfect combination of history and enjoyment in the Tithe barn and the North gate KronenburgNestled in the picturesque setting of the historic Kronenburg, these unique locations offer modern cuisine, regional Eifel specialities, fine distillates from the hotel's own distillery and a varied event programme. When designing the website for the Zehntscheune and Nordtor Kronenburg, it was important to me as a web designer to skilfully unite the two unique worlds of experience while at the same time emphasising their individual characters. With a clear structure, striking design and user-friendly navigation, it was possible to bring the traditional hospitality of the Zehntscheune and the modern elegance of the Nordtor to life on a shared platform. Tips & Tricks No. 22

9 reasons why your company needs a new logo
Is your logo still up to date? If you have the feeling that your logo no longer fits your company or our times, you should think about a change. A new logo is more than just replacing a graphic - it is your business card in the digital world and can have a significant impact on your company's success.
A logo is more than just a pretty picture - it is the face of your brand and characterises the image of your company, and an outdated or unsuitable logo can do more harm than good. Designing a new logo is therefore a complex process that requires a thorough analysis of your brand and your target audience. As a professional graphic designer, I can help you develop a logo that reflects your company values and appeals to your customers.
Here are nine reasons why your company might want to think about a new logo:
- No existing logo: Without a "proper" logo, it is difficult to build a strong brand identity. A professionally designed logo gives the company a face and makes it easier to recognise. It creates a visual connection with customers and helps to stand out from the competition.
Example: A start-up that has just been founded and does not yet have a visual identity. Or a company that was previously only known by a name without any graphic representation. The new logo has a memorable, modern and visual design that perfectly matches the industry and clearly represents the company visually.
- before
- after
- Outdated design: A logo that was designed many years ago may look outdated today and no longer fit in with current design trends.
Example: Today, a 90s-style logo with bright colours and 3D effects often looks kitschy and out of date. The redesigned logo is minimalist and uses skilful line drawings to create a contemporary and elegant look.
- before
- after
- Lack of recognisability: Is your logo so generic that it hardly stands out? A unique logo attracts more attention and is more memorable.
Example: A logo with a standard font such as Times and a line is difficult to remember and offers no recognition value. The new logo impresses with a very personal, industry-related font, a concise figurative mark and friendly colours that make it unmistakable.
- before
- after
- Technical restrictions: Does your logo not work in all formats or sizes? A modern logo should be flexible in use, both digitally and in print.
Example: A logo with fine details can appear blurred or lose important elements when displayed small. The revised logo impresses with its clear presentation and very modern design, which is shown to its best advantage in all formats and sizes.
- before
- after
- Redesign of individual elements: Sometimes it is not necessary to completely revise the entire logo, but only a part of it in order to convey a fresh and modern impression.
Example: A company has a logo with a very detailed and old-fashioned figurative mark that becomes blurred in smaller formats. Simplifying or modernising the figurative mark can improve readability and make the logo more flexible. The modernised figurative mark of the logo and the contemporary visualisation give the corporate identity a fresh and up-to-date look.
- before
- after
- Outdated fonts: Fonts are an important part of a company's visual identity. Outdated or inappropriate fonts can undermine the overall design and leave a negative impression. Modern fonts often look cleaner, more professional and more contemporary.
Example: The use of certain fonts can very quickly make a logo or design look outdated. These fonts are often associated with certain time periods or styles that are now perceived as unprofessional or old-fashioned. The new logo shows a compact representation with modern fonts and iconographic elements that make the design look professional and contemporary.
- before
- after
- Competition: Have your competitors modernised their logos? A fresh look can help you stand out from the competition.
Example: In an industry with many similar services, a unique logo can be a decisive competitive advantage. The calmer and more focussed presentation of the new logo conveys a professional impression and clearly sets the company apart from the competition.
- before
- after
- Digitisation: The digital age places new demands on logos. A new logo should also be optimised for digital applications.
Example: A logo that looked good in print 10 years ago doesn't necessarily have to look good on a smartphone display. With the partial change of the name and the new corporate design colours, the updated logo presents itself reduced and optimally suited for the digital age.
- before
- after
- Generational change and changing values: Each generation brings its own values, ideas and preferences with it. A generational change can mean that the existing values and the visual identity of the company are no longer in harmony. A new logo can help to reflect the new values and the changed corporate culture.
Example: A family business is taken over by the younger generation. They want a more modern image and want to combine the company's traditional values with a fresh look. The new logo looks young and fresh thanks to the skilful use of white space and modern design elements.
- before
- after
A well-designed logo is a long-term investment in your brand. It can help make your company more successful and leave a lasting impression on your customers. A new logo is the best investment in your future. Arrange a free consultation today and let us develop your new logo together.
White space - the invisible hero in logo design
Accordingly, it is not only the quality of the stroke, the print or the sophistication of any technique that guarantees the quality of the sign, it is also the white space within the sign or between the signs that confirms the expressive power of a sign.
- Adrian Frutiger | Swiss graphic designer, typographer and type designer
White space, often also called negative space, is an often underestimated element in graphic design. However, it plays a decisive role in the design of logos. This is because it not only gives a logo a certain lightness and breathability, but also contributes significantly to its impact and recognisability.
What actually is white space?
White space is the free area around or within a design. It is what not and yet it significantly influences how we perceive the design. In logo design, for example, white space can emphasise the shape of a figure, create a contrast or even become part of the actual design.
Why is white space so important?
- Clarity and order: White space ensures calm and order in a design. It prevents a logo from appearing cluttered and makes it easier to concentrate on the essential elements.
- Emphasis: The targeted use of white space can emphasise certain elements of a logo.
- Modernity: Many modern logos rely on generous white space. This gives them a timeless and elegant look.
- Versatility: White space can be used flexibly. It can be used over large areas as well as in small details.
How do you use white space in logo design?
- Negative Space: Negative space is a versatile design tool that can be used in both minimalist and complex designs. Here, white space is used to create an additional shape.
- Surroundings: The space around the logo is just as important. A sufficiently large border allows the logo to breathe and prevents it from blending in with other elements.
- Typography: White space also plays a role in typography. The space between the letters (tracking) and the lines (leading) influences legibility and the overall impression.
Examples of logos I have created with white space
White space is a powerful tool in the hands of the designer. It can decisively influence the effect of a logo and give it an unmistakable identity. So the next time you want a logo, remember: sometimes less is more.

9 arguments in favour of classic business cards
Business cards have been an essential part of business life for centuries. Despite the digital age, they have maintained their place.
In a world where digital communication is becoming increasingly important, the classic business card remains a valuable tool for personal and professional communication. It combines tradition with functionality and offers numerous advantages that are often lost in the digital space. In this blog article, I highlight the advantages of classic business cards and also discuss the modern version with a scannable QR code.
- Personal contact
Business cards enable a direct and personal exchange. Handing over a card creates a moment of connection that is often not achieved by digital means. - First impression
A well-designed business card can make a lasting first impression. It reflects professionalism and care and can impress potential customers or partners. - Tangibility
Physical business cards are tangible and can be easily stored or passed on. They serve as a constant reminder of an encounter or a business transaction. - Creative design options
The design options for physical business cards are diverse. Different types of paper, printing techniques and finishes such as embossing or varnishing offer creative freedom. - Eye-catching design
Special design elements such as a colour cut (on the edges of the business card) or special materials make your business card a real eye-catcher and make you stand out from the crowd. - Immediate access to information
Business cards offer a quick way to pass on contact details and important information without the need for technical devices. - Extended information
A QR code on the business card makes it possible to provide more information than would fit on a conventional card. By scanning the code, contact details, websites, social media profiles and more can be stored directly on the smartphone. - Timeliness and flexibility
QR codes allow the digital content to which they refer to be updated at any time. This means that changes to contact details or additional information can be easily adapted without having to print new cards. - Combination of physical and digital
Business cards with a QR code combine the advantages of the physical and digital worlds. They offer the feel and personal touch of a classic business card, while at the same time providing access to more comprehensive and up-to-date digital information.
The modern business card with QR code
Imagine you receive a business card from a business partner. At first glance, it looks like a classic business card: high-quality paper, attractive design. But there is a QR code on the back. You pull out your smartphone, scan the code and a mobile website opens with all the relevant information - from contact information and social media links to a link to a current project or portfolio. The data is always up to date and you can save it directly in your address book.
As a professional graphic designer, I offer you the design of classic business cards that are not only aesthetically pleasing, but also effectively communicate your brand and personality. Whether traditional or with an integrated QR code - I design business cards that optimally fulfil your needs and leave a lasting impression. Utilise the advantages of classic business cards to impress in personal contact and at the same time build a bridge to the digital world with modern elements such as QR codes. Let's design your perfect business card together!
Fresh on the net: SYMA
Since 1988 the SYMA Immobilienverwaltungs- und Verwertungsgesellschaft mbH active in Frechen. In over 35 years, the company has acquired and continuously demonstrated extensive expertise in all areas of property management. It offers its customers structured property management, as the four business divisions cover the entire spectrum.
As a web designer, I am particularly pleased to have had the opportunity to design the company's new website. Working with SYMA was extremely inspiring as they brought their many years of experience and expertise to the project. The new website now not only reflects the company's professionalism, but also provides a user-friendly platform for customers and interested parties to find out more about their comprehensive services.

The classics: expressive adverts
In today's digital world, print advertising may seem old-fashioned to some. But for companies that operate regionally and sell products or services directly to customers in their area, print is still a powerful and effective advertising medium.
